MAURY COUNTY, Tenn. -

A Maury County maintenance worker was killed in a lawnmower accident Monday morning.

The accident involving David Haynes occurred at Rutherford Lane and Oakland Parkway at the entrance of the old industrial park.

Authorities told Nashville's News 2 the 48-year-old man was cutting grass on a steep embankment when the mower flipped over and pinned him underneath the piece of machinery.

A passerby saw the overturned mower and called 911.

"There's a guy on a lawn mower, and the lawn mower is on top of him, upside down," the caller said to the dispatcher.

The dispatcher asked if Haynes was able to talk, and the caller reported that he was not speaking.

"His face is straight down in the dirt," the caller explained.

Haynes was said to be working alone when the accident occurred.

Jim Bailey, the Maury County Mayor, said they'll really never know what happened.

"It's a terrible shock," Bailey said.

"David was a very jolly person. He came to work, did his job, and went home. I had great respect for him," the mayor continued.

The accident remains under investigation.

Haynes has worked with Maury County for 10 years.

He is survived by his parents.
