Tax filers angry after post office closes early

Posted: Updated: April 16, 2013 03:08 PM

Waiting until the last minute to mail their tax returns turned out to be a bad idea for dozens of Middle Tennesseans who arrived at the main post office in Nashville late Monday night to find out it had closed.

For years the post office on Royal Parkway stayed open until midnight.

This year the decision was made to close at 9 p.m. because most people now file their taxes electronically.

However, last-minute filers that spoke to Nashville's News 2 didn't know that.

"I wasn't expecting pizza. I wasn't expecting any kind of fanfare, but I was expecting them to be open to take my return," said Heinrich Tischler.

Many were upset and wanted to know why the U.S. Postal Service hadn't sent out any notification.

"All they did is put two signs up in very small print in two obscure locations," said Russell Mason.

The tax returns dropped off after the office closed were stamped a day late.

A spokesman for the U.S. Postal Service said he apologized for any inconvenience.

A spokesman for the Internal Revenue Service said last-minute filers who face a penalty can ask the IRS to forgive it.
