RUTHERFORD COUNTY, Tenn. -

Two schools in Rutherford County were put on lockdown Tuesday afternoon as authorities searched for an armed man.

Both Buchanon Elementary and Whitworth-Buchanon Middle schools were locked down around 2:40 p.m. due to an armed, suicidal man loose in the area.

Original dismissal was delayed but children were let out of school around 3 p.m.

Police said that the man's wife reported that her husband was suicidal and armed with a 20-gauge shotgun.

He was located at Elam Mill Road at the slab by a deputy who took cover. The man then fled.

"We're using county resources to try to find him," said Sheriff Robert Arnold.

At 10:05 p.m. the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office reported the man had checked himself in to Middle Tennessee Medical Center.
