SPRING HILL, Tenn. -

A 10-year-old girl from Spring Hill has died from flu complications even though she received a flu shot.

According to a report by The Tennessean, after becoming sick two and a half weeks ago, Halle Henderson died on Friday morning at Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital.

Halle received the flu vaccination in December, but was diagnosed with strain B flu on March 20.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this year's vaccine had a 67% effectiveness rate against that flu strain.

Three days after Halle was diagnosed with the flu, she was rushed to the hospital after complaining of stomach and chest pains and difficulty breathing.

Doctors revived her after Halle went into cardiac arrest performing CPR for about two hours.

Infections resulting from the flu had severely damaged her heart, so family and friends had been praying that she would receive a heart transplant.

The infection morphed into a serious case of myocarditis, an inflammation of the middle layer of her heart.

The annual flu vaccine does not provide full immunity against illness, but the CDC recommends that everyone get the shot to curb the spread of the seasonal virus.

According to Shelley Walker, a spokesperson for the Tennessee Department of Health, the flu is still in circulation.

"While each and any loss is tragic, it is not unusual for Tennessee to have two or three pediatric deaths related to complications from influenza each season," Walker said.

Three children have died from complications of the flu in Tennessee so far this season.

"Overall, seasonal flu cases are on the decline in Tennessee, but our weekly surveillance reports do show that influenza is still circulating in Tennessee at low levels and as long as it is present, there is a risk of infections and complications of influenza illness," said Walker.
