MT. PLEASANT, Tenn. -

A Mt. Pleasant police officer was arrested Friday morning for statutory rape by an authority figure.

The charges against 25-year-old Jason Jones stem from an alleged sexual encounter involving a 16-year-old male that occurred at his home located inside the Columbia city limits.

Police learned of the inappropriate behavior after receiving a tip from a concerned citizen.

Since his arrest, Jones, who worked as a patrol officer for 14 months, has been terminated.

Chief Tommy Goetz told Nashville's News 2 Investigates Jones worked with the small department as a reserve officer for a year prior to joining the force.

Lt. Joey Gideon of the Columbia police said he was surprised to learn of Jones' arrest and that it is a horrible feeling as a police officer to investigate another police officer.

Authorities said Jones had contact with the alleged victim on several occasions as a police officer.

Chief Goetz told Nashville's News 2 he was saddened and disappointed by Jones' arrest.

"We are going to pick ourselves up and move forward and do what we can so this community can trust us. Hopefully they will be fair in their judgment of this department," he said.

Jones was booked into the Maury County jail early Friday morning. He has since been released on a $75,000 bond.

Police said they do not feel as if there are any additional alleged victims.

Nashville's News 2 Investigates went to Jones' home on Monday for comment, though no one answered the door.
