NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

A man barely escaped with his life Thursday morning when fire swept through his friend's north Nashville trailer where he was staying.

Samuel LeClair told Nashville's News 2 he was trying to start a heater when flames erupted "all around him" in the trailer located on a lot at 11th and Herman Street.

"I lost my credit card, $11 and my shoes," LeClair said as he watched fireman quickly put out the flames.

With his feet in a sack to keep them warm, LeClair said he had come to Nashville three months ago to find work as a carpenter.

He also showed Nashville's News 2 a deep hand cut suffered when escaping the flames.

LeClair received first aid on the scene for the wound.

There were no other injuries or damage from the fire which briefly sent up a plume of smoke visible for several miles around the downtown area.

The property owner said LeClair's friend, who rented a house on the lot, was being evicted.

LeClair said he is unsure where he will now live.
