Joe Sims says his infant daughter is living proof car seats save lives.

Nine-month-old Morgan Howell-Sims was in the seat next to her dad when he apparently suffered a seizure and crashed nearly two weeks ago.

Sims' pick-up truck veered off James Campbell Boulevard in Columbia before traveling down a steep embankment and crashing into a drainage ditch.

Sims, 45, was flown to Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

The little girl was carried away without a cut on her body.  She was laughing and in good spirits, according to first responders.

"She's here for a reason and we're here to take care of her," said Sims.

Most of the damage to the truck was on Morgan's side. The seat was full of broken glass.

"Car seats work," said Sims. "We don't pull out of the driveway without making sure she is in hers and is strapped in."

Sims has a broken collarbone, a broken sternum and cuts and bruises all over his body.

The father told Nashville's News 2 he suffered a couple of seizures several years ago, but never while he was driving. Doctors are trying to figure out what caused this one.

Sims was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
