A 32-year-old Kingsport man was taken into police custody after he allegedly agreed to sell his school-aged daughter for $1,500.
According to a report in the Kingsport Times-News, Shawn Hughes told the assumed buyer that he needed the cash to bail his girlfriend out of jail.
The newspaper reported Hughes was arrested by Kingsport police Wednesday afternoon in a parking lot on Wilcox Drive where he was scheduled to exchange his six-year-old girl with a 75-year-old woman who was directed by police to accept his terms for money.
Police were notified of the agreement after a family member contacted them.
Hughes faces multiple charges including illegal payments in connection with placement of a child and two counts of possession of drugs.
