Community comes together to help with Baby Andrew's road to recovery

GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. -

A group of motorcycle riders hit the road on Saturday for a good cause.

The kickstands went up at noon for the "Heart Ride" to benefit Baby Andrew and his family.

The guest of honor, Andrew Hagewood, just turned one in February.

Baby Andrew has spent the majority of his life in the hospital.

After being born with an enlarged heart, the child was the recipient of a heart transplant last March.

Baby Andrew's fight is far from over, he still requires a feeding tube, oxygen at night, and plenty of medication.

Stephanie Adkins helped coordinate the Heart Ride.

"You're never in the clear after a transplant," Adkins said. "There's always things that can come up along the way. And medical care continues all the time."

The medical care required for Andrew can be extremely expensive.

Only one parent can work full time due to the care that baby Andrew needs.

"Even with insurance, it's a lot of money out of pocket and it's something he'll have to face in medication costs and doctor's appointments all the time," said Adkins.

Dozens of motorcycle riders paid $20 dollars to participate in Saturday's benefit. All proceeds will go to the Hagewood family to help offset some of those costs.

The Heart Ride began at the Millersville Church of Christ and ended about eleven miles away at the Buffalo Wild Wings in Hendersonville.

That Buffalo Wild Wings location donated 10 percent of today's proceeds to Baby Andrew and his family.
