NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

A 37-year-old man was struck and killed on Interstate 24 in south Nashville late Wednesday night.

The accident happened just before 11:30 p.m. along I-24 east at mile marker 59, at the exit for Bell Road.

Officials told Nashville's News 2 the man was traveling on the Interstate when he pulled over to the side for an unknown reason. He then walked onto the roadway.

He was hit by a Ford van, a freightliner, and a Kia.

According to Metro police Captain Ken Walburn, a preliminary investigation indicates the pedestrian was on I-24 east when the Ford hit him.

The Freightliner and Kia then also hit the pedestrian. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Shortly before the crash, a south precinct officer was nearby checking on a broken down vehicle on I-24 east, not far from Bell Road, when he heard the crash.

The vehicle that officer was checking on was registered to the pedestrian.

The pedestrian's identity is being withheld until his family is notified.

The Fatal Team is assisting with the investigation.

All lanes of I-24 east were shutdown for several hours and have since reopened.

No other information was immediately released.
