NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

Lightning struck a house on Monday morning causing a fire to break out.

The home located on Due West Avenue caught fire at 9 a.m.

Homeowner Bob Hunley told Nashville's News 2 that the lightning sounded like a bomb exploding.

The Hunley's smelled smoke before finally locating the fire and calling for help.

The retired couple and their dog were able to make it safely out of their home.

The fire destroyed most of home's attic, but firemen acted quickly and were able to save a portrait painting of Sam Houston before extinguishing the flames.
