A Rutherford County woman who lost 170 pounds naturally will be featured on the weekday medical show "The Doctors."
Heather Gum, who works for the University of Tennessee – Tennessee State University Extension Office in Murfreesboro, said the show's producers contacted her after she wrote to them about an issue facing everyone who loses a tremendous amount of weight.
"I'm stuck with all this skin. That is like a constant reminder of the past that I'm done with," Gum said.
Gum said that her insurance company doesn't cover procedures that would remove it.
"I was told by a plastic surgeon that there is about 25 pounds, give or take, of excess skin," she explained.
Gum shared photos of herself, which show how girdles hold the excess skin around her mid-section and arms.
"I girdle to hold it in, so I have prevented back pain, back problems. I've prevented rashes," she said. "Of course when I go to bed and I take this off, the weight comes back. Every night. Mentally at least."
She said the episode of "The Doctors" will discuss procedures available today to remove skin left over from dramatic weight loss.
"The Doctors" airs weekday mornings on Nashville's News 2.
