Hermitage officer, K9 injured after being struck by motorist

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

A Hermitage police officer and a K9 unit sustained minor injuries after being stuck by a motorist early Saturday morning.

Officer William Wright and Canine Officer John David Young, stopped to help a broken down motorist on Interstate 40 West near Spence Lane.

While assisting the motorist change a flat tire, another driver traveling westbound on I-40 struck Officer Young's vehicle.

Officer Young's canine partner, Echo, was in the back seat of the police car when it was hit.

The police car was pushed into the broken down car.

Officer Young sustained minor injuries during the crash. He has since been treated and released from the hospital.

Echo was transported to an area vet's office and will be kept overnight for evaluation.

The motorist that struck Officer Young's vehicle was charged with a DUI.
