NASHVILLE, Tenn. -
An accidental shooting occurred at a hotel near the airport and claimed the life of a 10-month-old baby Thursday night.
The call went out just before 6:45 p.m. at the Extended Stay of America on Elm Hill Pike.
Police reported that the child's father, 30-year-old Larry Bass of Texas, was handling a semi-automatic pistol when it accidentally went off once and struck his son, Adam, in the chest.
Two officers were able to get to the scene within three minutes and administered CPR on the child. Their efforts were unsuccessful.
The 10-month-old did not survive.
Police said they believe the gun fired due to a possible mechanical error and it was unintentionally discharged.
They also said that Bass checked into the hotel on January 29 with his family when he began work as an iron worker on the Music City Center.
Bass and his wife Jacquelin, 28, have two other children, boys ages two and three.
Police are still processing the scene and at this time no charges have been filed.
Reports stated that the investigation will continue during the night as detectives work with the distraught parents to understand exactly how the shooting occurred.
No further details have been released.
