Man accused of killing Dickson toddler due in court

DICKSON, Tenn. (AP) - A Dickson man accused of killing the 18-month-old child of his girlfriend last week before dropping her off at a relative's home is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.

The Tennessean is reporting that Edward Benesch is scheduled to make his first court appearance on charges of reckless homicide and child abuse.

The 26-year-old man was caring for Somarah Smith while the baby's mother was in jail on charges of failure to pay child support.

Benesch dropped off Somarah and her 2-year-old sister to the children's great-aunt's house on Thursday, and the girl was already dead.

Last week the state Department of Children's Services acknowledged that the girl's father called DCS last month because he was concerned about the safety of his children in Benesch's care.
