Manchester police are investigating a shooting that involved a three-year-old boy Saturday night.

According to a report by the Manchester Times, the victim was airlifted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Billy Butler, lead investigator with the Manchester Police Department said the child remains in stable condition Sunday.

According to police, the gun was left in the home by the child's aunt. The aunt allegedly took the gun out of her pocket while at the residence and forgot that she left it.

The aunt was at the home after a shopping trip with the child's mom.

Butler confirmed the child picked up the gun and shot himself.

Manchester Police Department plans to release more information Monday to discuss possible charges against the aunt.

The parents of the child will not be charged.

The Department of Children's Services was also called to the scene Saturday night.

The identity of the child has not been released.
