CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -
A Chattanooga high school student was shot and killed near a local high school Monday morning, ABC affiliate WTVC-TV reports.
According to the television station, the incident occurred in the 2600 block of Carr Street around 10:30 a.m.
The victim, whose identity was not immediately released, was a student at Howard High School.
Initial reports indicate the victim may have been chased from the school's property by the gunman.
Police arrested 18-year-old Courtney Birt in relation to the shooting just after 1 p.m.
A motive was not immediately known.
Howard High School was placed on a lockdown immediately following the shooting.
According to the school's principal, the gunman was never inside the school.
