'Ride for Reading' delivering thousands of books by bike

Posted: Updated: March 4, 2013 11:05 AM

Dozens of bicyclists will head off to an east Nashville elementary school Monday to encourage literacy and physical activity.

About 25 volunteers from the Nashville-based Ride For Reading organization will hop on bicycles around Noon to bring 1,000 books to Dan Mills Elementary.

Volunteers with the organization will ride six miles to the school from Shelby Bottoms Nature Center.

Each child will then pick out a book and the riders will then head the six miles back to the nature center.

"There's one in 300 low income families that actually have age appropriate books for kids," board member Graham Gerdeman said. "They yell and scream and are so happy to take home something they can call their own."

The organization was founded by a Metro teacher 5 years ago, and so far they've donated more than 110,000 books.
