MAURY COUNTY, Tenn. -

A single car accident in Maury County early Sunday morning killed a 21 year-old Columbia man and sent a teen to the hospital.

Tennessee Highway Patrol said the driver was speeding and lost control going around a bend on Canaan Road in Mt. Pleasant around 3:30 a.m.

After losing control, the car landed upside down in a creek.

One of the firefighters on the scene was treated by EMS for hypothermia after entering the water in an attempt to rescue the trapped occupant.

The driver, Matthew Williams died.

The passenger Haley Linam, 19, was airlifted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Vanderbilt confirmed that Linham is in stable condition.

Williams nor Linam were wearing seatbelts and troopers say it could have made a difference.
