Anne Howard delivered her babies on the side of Interstate 65 in Franklin early Thursday morning.
FRANKLIN, Tenn. -
Two EMS workers for Williamson Medical Center helped a woman deliver a set of twins on the side of Interstate 65 early Thursday morning.
The expectant mother, Anne Howard, was being driven to the hospital by her mother when the pair was pulled over by a Williamson County Sheriff's deputy for speeding.
"By the time the officer opened the door, the first baby was crowning," Howard said. "Thankfully he pulled us over, because he suggested we call the EMS and they arrived in five minutes. I don't know what would have happened if they hadn't gotten there when they did."
Howard was helped onto a stretcher and into an ambulance, where at 2:09 a.m., she delivered her baby Brooklynn, who weighed 5 pounds, 12 ounces.
"The EMS did a phenomenal job of taking care of the first baby," Howard said. "But then I said ‘there's another one coming.' They were very professional and handled both deliveries very well. They did everything they could do in the ambulance."
Sister, Heidi arrived two minutes later weighing in at five pounds, five ounces.
Paramedic Michael Cooke said Thursday morning's delivery was his first.
"The mother did everything right," Cooke said. "The delivery went rapidly and both babies were in good position. She didn't have an epidural or anything. She couldn't have been more amazing. She made it easy. You are always nervous with childbirth. You want it to go perfectly and this one did."
