CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -
On Thursday, a judge ruled a former Montgomery County high school football coach accused of raping a teenage girl is not guilty of the charges by reason of insanity.
Phillip Horsey was charged with rape and sexual battery in 2011 for an incident involving a 16-year-old girl.
It was decided after mental evaluations were performed that Horsey did commit the sexual acts, however he was said to be suffering from a severe mental illness at the time.
Horsey retired as Montgomery Central's football coach in 1998. The school's football field, Phillip Horsey Field, is named in his honor.
