Police in Columbia said a surveillance video showed a man robbing a woman as she tried to make a night deposit at a bank was not what it looked like.
The Columbia Daily Herald reported that the video shot outside F&M Bank on January 20 at 1501 Hatcher Lane, appeared to show the robbery reported by Ebony Brewster, 21.
The Quik Mart employee, informed police that she had stepped out of her car to deposit a bag of her employers money containing over $1,000, then a man approached her, jerked the bag out of her hand and fled.
Alfonzo Carter, 22, of Columbia confessed to robbing Brewster and was arrested and charged with robbery after he was questioned by police
An interview with police showed that the story was different.
On the same night of Carter's confession, Brewster was charged as his accomplice in the crime and jailed for theft over $1,000, criminal conspiracy and making a false report.
Brewster was later released on $15,000 bond.
According to police, Carter's robbery charge was dropped and replaced with theft and criminal conspiracy. *The Columbia Daily Herald contributed to this report.
