'A Night At The Oscars' Legacy Ball to raise funds for abused children

FRANKLIN, Tenn. -

Child sexual and physical abuse, a typically unspoken issue was in the spotlight on Saturday night.

Each year, the Davis House Child Advocacy Center, an organization working to protect child abuse victims by providing services to them and their families, hosts an annual fundraiser.

The organization raises funds through an event called The Legacy Ball. This year's ball was themed "A Night At The Oscars."

The funds raised during Saturday's event will go toward funding services provided by Davis House.

"It's very important that we have the funds so that no child who needs our services has their needs unmet," said Marcus Stamps, executive director of Davis House Child Advocacy Center, "As we raise awareness, we not only get people to know that this [abuse] is going on, that this is an issue in our community but we also let parents and children know that there is a place to go to get them the help that they need."

Sindy Pollard and her family benefited from the Davis House's help several years ago, after finding out that her daughter had been abused for nearly three years.

"We were getting ready to go on a family trip and I found out that my daughter had been abused and it was her natural father and it's not anything that anyone ever expects to have to live through," Pollard told Nashville's News 2.

The services provided by the Davis House helped Pollard and her family cope.

"They [Davis House] took a broken, bruised family and helped us learn how to make the right choices and they walked with us every step of the way," Pollard said. "Child abuse is something that never goes away but you have the choice whether you survive or you don't survive."

The event featured a live painting from artist Heidi Schwartz.

Schwartz told Nashville's News 2 this is her third year painting at the Legacy Ball.

Schwartz, who paints live at events in and around Nashville, painted an interpretation of the event throughout the night and auctioned off the finished painting.

"All of the proceeds go to the charity. The painting will be auctioned off in the "Not So Silent" auction," she explained.

"This is a cause I'm deeply passionate about and proud to be an advocate of."

Last year, the organization assisted 420 new child clients and provided 1,985 free services to the victims and their non-offending families.
