The American Pet Products Association estimates that Americans spent almost $53 billion on their pets last year. The estimation is up 5% from 2011."You would want to give them what you would give yourself or your own child," said dog owner Ellen Slight. Food and veterinary care account for the biggest expenditures, but there is also grooming and boarding."We have friends or family watch them, or we have them boarded or they do the daycare thing. It can get really expensive," Slight added.Aside from the usual expenses, about $12.5 billion was used for services like pet acupuncture and pet chiropractors.
