A Mid-State woman celebrates her 65th birthday by running her 65th mile.
Eight years ago, Niki Yarbrough was dealing with severe arthritis and walking with a cane. Then one day, she decided she wasn't going to let it hold her back and decided to walk her first half marathon.
Fifty pounds down and taking on the biggest physical feat of her life, she started running and committed to 65 miles to celebrate her birthday.
She has been running one mile a day for the last 64 days, and on her 65th birthday Wednesday, her friends and supporters joined her in running her 65th mile.
"There were times I thought I just don't want to go today, but then I realized I can't make up the day", Yarbrough said.
The group crossed the finish line at Personal Best Fitness in Brentwood, where Yarbrough has trained for years, welcomed by signs and a champagne toast.
"There was a saying on Facebook I saw yesterday that said, 'She believed she could, so she did'. In the beginning, I didn't believe I could, but I did," she added.
