Mom charged with DUI after nearly falling asleep with kids in car

Melissa Karcher, 26 Melissa Karcher, 26

A Clarksville mother faces multiple charges, including driving under the influence, after she nearly fell asleep in a fast food restaurant drive through with her children in the car.

According to police, Melissa Karcher was taken into police custody around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday after a fast food worker reported she appeared to be inebriated and very confused.

The employee reported to police the 26-year-old woman dropped her phone into her drink before dropping the drink and repeatedly trying to give the server dirty paper towels.

When police arrived to the scene, Karcher was found sitting in the driver's seat while her two children, ages nine and two-months, were in the backseat.

Upon questioning, Karcher denied drinking or taking medication. She claimed she had been awake all night.

After failing a field sobriety test, Karcher was taken to an area hospital for a blood test, where she fell asleep in a chair.

Karcher was booked into the Montgomery County Jail for DUI, driving on a suspended license and two counts of child abuse and neglect among others.

She has been released on a $9,000 bond.

The children have since been released into the custody of their father. The Department of Children's Services was notified.
