MT. JULIET, Tenn. -
Wilson County school officials confiscated a small caliber handgun from a student at West Wilson Middle School on Monday.
Officials said the 14-year-old student, whose identity was not released, was taken into custody and will not be returning to the school.
The school's SRO was notified of the gun around 1 p.m. It was located a short time later in the student's backpack which was inside a locker.
Authorities also discovered marijuana and tobacco.
Director of Wilson County Schools Mike Davis told Nashville's News 2 a message was sent to parents at 3:20 p.m. regarding the incident.
The Wilson County Sheriff's Department is interviewing family members in an attempt to determine who the gun belongs to.
No additional information was released.
