Heart recipient Andrew Hagewood celebrated his first birthday at Vanderbilt Children's Hospital on Wednesday. It's a day many didn't know if he would live to see.
Andrew was born last February 6 with an enlarged heart.
Since his birth, he has spent most of his life at the Nashville hospital after receiving a heart transplant in March.
"If it wasn't for the donor heart, we wouldn't be sitting here saying what a blessing and we don't forget that part," said Christy Hagewood.
Andrew has suffered many complications and setbacks but his parents told Nashville's News 2 his condition has improved.
Andrew remains on oxygen and will take rejection medication for the rest of his life, however on Wednesday, the family focused on the happy occasion.
"It is just such a blessing," said Christy said.
Andrew was showered with love and affection throughout the day with cupcakes made by his three older sisters, birthday cards and opening gifts from his family.
"We know from how he's doing now it looks like many more good days are to come," Christy said.
Doctors hope Andrew will be released from the hospital later this week.
A benefit ride for Andrew is scheduled to take place on March 23. Additional information has yet to be released.
