COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -

Police arrested an expectant mother in Cookeville last week after it was discovered she was selling drugs.

According to a report in the Herald Citizen, on Tuesday police were notified Alexis Smith was selling drugs at the corner of Polly Drive and Harris Street.

Authorities arrested the 23-year-old pregnant woman after seeing her enter a nearby residence and come back outside a short time later with three pills in her possession.

The newspaper reported Smith allegedly told police she had been selling prescription pills and that the pills belonged to another woman who was unaware she was selling them.

Smith added she was selling the pills in an effort to pay bills and buy baby clothes.

She also allegedly admitted to using drugs while pregnant.

Smith is charged with possession of a controlled substance and sale/delivery of narcotics.

The Department of Children's Services was notified of her arrest.
