NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

A Nashville woman is asking for prayers for her mom after she was hit by a car while walking to a church gathering in Madison Wednesday night.

Theresa Lawton, 52, was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where she remains in critical condition.

"My first instinct was why would this happen to her? Not only is she my mom, she on a daily basis counsels other people and her whole life is ministry," said Lawton's daughter, Amber McDonald.

Officers arrested Gregory Capps and charged him with felony vehicular assault after the SUV he was driving hit and injured Lawton.

Metro police said Capps, 43, was traveling south on East Marthona Road when the collision occurred.

Capps told officers he didn't see the woman.

Officers detected an odor of alcohol on Capps. He was taken to General Hospital for a mandatory blood test after field sobriety tasks indicated impairment.

In addition to vehicular assault, Capps was also charged with driving on a revoked license.

"I know she would not want me or any of my family to have any type of resentment over the person who did this.  She'd be saying forgiveness, forgiveness," said McDonald.

Capps has a court date on February 5.
