Parents take look at magnet schools during 'Walk through Tuesday'

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

Two weeks ago, parents were on pins and needles for "Selection Saturday," the day were parents learned if their students were selected through a lottery to fill one of the limited open spots for an optional school of their choice.

On Tuesday, about a dozen parents and students toured John Early Museum Magnet Middle School as part of "Walk Through Tuesday."

"Walk Through Thursday" gives parents and students both the opportunity to get a first hand look at they school they have been selected for.

Chad and Rouella Smith's daughter won a chance to attend John Early Museum Magnet school through the lottery.

The parents choose John Early because it feeds into Hume-Fogg Magnet High School.

"It is one of the top schools in the state and nation from what we hear," Chad Smith told Nashville's News 2.

Parent Shirley Hawkins toured the school with her daughter, Jaressa.

"We are trying to get her in a path to going to either MLK or Hume-Fogg and this was one of the schools that we applied for hoping to lead that path toward Hume-Fogg," explained Hawkins.

She continued, "My family, and I think a lot of other families, understand that education is so important and you have to start young. Every thing is like a domino affect, the earlier you start the better everything sort of flows."

For parents like the Smith's and Hawkins, the extra effort and sacrifices they make are worth the chance to help give their children the best possible education.

Parents can call the customer service center with the Metro Nashville Public School board at 615-259-INFO (4636) to schedule a one-on-one tour of a school.

Parents can also go to the school board's Selection Day Web page for additional information.
