An off-duty correctional officer was taken into police custody Thursday afternoon for an alleged scheme to transport illegal drugs to inmates at a the Charles Bass Facility in west Nashville. Authorities said they recently received information alerting them that Nicholas Smith was willing to transport cocaine and marijuana to inmates for a fee.The 27-year-old was taken into custody after he met a police operative at a Shelby Avenue gas station Thursday. During the set up meeting, Smith took possession of 28 grams of marijuana and two grams of cocaine that he agreed to take inside the institution. He was also paid a $300 delivery fee.Smith was arrested a short time after the sting operation. Authorities have since recovered the illegal drugs and cash. Smith, who has been employed by the Department of Correction since August 2011, is charged with possession of cocaine and marijuana for resale while traveling within drug-free school zones. He remains jailed in lieu of $55,000 bond.
