Student broadcasters find Internet notoriety for basketball calls

An appearance on Yahoo! Sports' Web site has catapulted a pair of local high school student broadcasters toward Internet notoriety.

Originally broadcast live on the web via Hillsboro High School's Burro-TV broadcasting program, the video clips showcased some of the young announcers more zealous calls and have been seen by more than 300,000 people.

After a big dunk from senior Micah Phillips in a game against Franklin, viewers heard "Man down! Man down! We can't deal! I just don't know what's going on!"

Logan Burns, a junior football talent who began broadcasting while recuperating from an injury, makes up half of the announcing pair.

He described the almost-infamous call.

"It's a fast break coming down the court and Micah Phillips got the ball and is coming down, and the next thing I know, he's just going airborne and before he even dunks it, John goes 'Micah Phillips with the dunk' and we just went crazy from there."

However, Hillsboro junior John Jointer, the other half of the energetic duo, downplays the attention.

"Around the school, there's been a couple of students that come up to me, and teachers that say it was funny, but nothing special," he said.

The school's broadcast teacher, Becky Banazak, told Nashville's News 2 the students ability to let loose sets them apart.

"I wanted us to set ourselves apart as a high school broadcast program that is still serious and providing the stats and information that the viewers want to hear, but also just having fun with it and allowing them to be free. I think their personalities are like gold, and that's what really makes the show."

Micah Phillips, who can't hear the broadcasters during the game because he's on the court taking the shots, said he's glad to hear the announcers are having as much fun as the players.

"I was just so excited seeing how crazy they had gotten, and it just made me feel good to know that I got the big dunk and my friends that I'm classmates with, how happy they were for me," he said.
