ERIN, Tenn. (AP) - Authorities say a medical examiner's report shows that a couple found dead inside their burned home in Humphreys County were shot prior to the fire.
In a story posted online by The Leaf-Chronicle, Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis told The Stewart-Houston Times that the report he received from the state medical examiner's office identified the bodies of Elaine Hewitt, an elementary school principal, and her husband, Carl.
Early-morning fires on Jan. 16 destroyed two homes located about five minutes apart belonging to the Hewitts. Davis said DNA testing is needed to identify the third body found in the home, whom authorities believe is the couple's adult son, Wade Hewitt.
Davis said a weapon was recovered at the scene and they do not suspect an outside party in the shootings.
