The cold temps are here, and everyone is asking if it will yield winter like precipitation.
The answer is possibly so, but not in the form of snow.
We are watching a small possibility for a wintry mix late Wednesday night through early Thursday morning, BUT a much higher possibility late Thursday night through Friday morning.
So we are going to concentrate on that one:
The 2nd map to the right shows the forecasted isobars (ECMWF Model) and 6 hour precip valid Friday at 6AM.
The last two maps show the surface temperatures and midnight and 6AM respectively Friday morning.
The temps aloft will be ABOVE freezing, which means the precip falls as rain, possibly into sub-freezing temps at the surface, meaning sleet and/or freezing rain. Near the KY border and northward that could be snow.
If this occurs, slick roads could be a problem Friday morning.
