A fashion design student at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro is traveling across the country to participate in a national fashion competition that could change her life.
Alycia Gillaspie is flying to Utah, along with four other students selected from across the country, to compete in Project OR and design the best outdoor garment.
Gillaspie has been sketching and sewing since she was in the 6th grade, and now the MTSU senior is looking to make it in the competitive world of fashion design.
The contestants will be briefed on their assignment at 10 a.m. Wednesday morning at the Winter Outdoor Retailer Market in Salt Lake City.
Then, they have 48 hours to come up with a unique concept, before they sketch, sew and create the garment.
In the past few weeks, Gillaspie has done a lot of brainstorming for her garment.
"Very bright colors to send out against the elements they're very popular and I want to really think about versatility and function," she explained.
The winner will be featured in a magazine and will be invited back next year to host Project OR.
Gillaspie says she's excited to meet people at the event to network and get her foot in the door in a tough industry.
