Alcoa woman dies, firefighter injured in early morning fire

ALCOA (WATE) - A woman died early Thursday morning when her Alcoa apartment caught fire. A firefighter was injured while fighting the fire.

Alcoa Fire Chief Roger Robinson said the fire was reported at 2:13 a.m. in an apartment complex at 340 Sanderson Rd. The fire started in the living room of one unit.

Firefighters reported seeing heavy black smoke pouring out of the unit as they arrived on scene.

The fire was found in the front living room of the apartment, but was spreading to other parts of the unit and smoke filled the rooms.

The fire was put out in about five minutes, but during a search of the apartment the unconscious victim was found in a back room.

Responders performed CPR on her and transported her to Blount Memorial Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Her name has not been released, pending notification of her family.

The firefighter who was injured fell and broke his ankle while pulling hose from the truck. His name has also not been released.

Residents from six to eight units were displaced by the fire.

The cause of the fire has not been released.
