Tenn. hospital treats drug-dependent babies

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - East Tennessee Children's Hospital has treated so many babies born dependent on prescription drugs that the facility is now helping other medical centers around the country deal with the crisis.

The hospital in Knoxville is on the front lines of the crisis of newborns suffering from dependence as a result of their mothers abusing prescription drugs while pregnant. As a result, it has developed protocols for treatment.

The hospital has treated more than 500 babies since 2008 who are suffering from what is known as neonatal abstinence syndrome. It is now averaging almost one a day.

Staff members say babies can suffer immensely when in withdrawal. They are often inconsolable and have nausea, vomiting and severe stomach cramps. The worst cases can have seizures.

DCS-CHILD DEATH FILES

Review by newspaper turns up more DCS problems

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A review by a Nashville newspaper has found that many of the recently released case files of children who died or nearly died after being under the supervision of the state Department of Children's Services were not filled out until months after a child's death.

The Tennessean reviewed 36 of the 42 records of cases released at a hearing on Friday by Davidson County Chancellor Carol McCoy.

The newspaper also found that many of the records lacked legally required information.

The release of the documents was the result of a lawsuit filed by a group of media organizations led by The Tennessean and including The Associated Press that sought access to records of children DCS was supposed to be helping.

MISSING MAN

Authorities search for man who jumped in lake

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Authorities are continuing to search for a man who jumped into Percy Priest Lake.

WTVF-TV reports that the 55-year-old man was last seen Saturday evening. He was on a pontoon boat with a group of friends when he jumped off near a small island in the lake and never resurfaced.

Emergency crews searched for about two hours Saturday before suspending the search and starting again Sunday morning.

The man has not been identified.

LAND PRESERVATION

4,000 acres preserved with agreement

MARYVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The Brookfield Renewable Energy Group and The Nature Conservancy have come to an agreement that will preserve about 4,000 acres of land in East Tennessee.

The Daily Times reports the agreement covers land connecting the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Cherokee National Forest.

According to a recent announcement, The Nature Conservancy will convey the acreage over a 2-year period to state and federal partners.

Brookfield U.S. chairman John Zuccotti said the company "believes in greening and believes in renewable power."

RETIREMENT COMMUNITIES

New retirement communities popping up in W. Tenn.

GERMANTOWN, Tenn. (AP) - Two new retirement and assisted living communities have opened recently in West Tennessee and at least three more are planned.

The Commercial Appeal reports the facilities are targeting the aging baby boomer population.

The Solana of Germantown and Robinwood Retirement of Bartlett held soft openings this year, and at least three others are planned for the area.

Collierville Town Planner Jaime Groce says: "We're being flanked."

Groce says as baby boomers retire, it changes the housing needs of the area. For instance, about 12% of the population in Collierville is age 62 or older.

Bob Dalhoff, a planner in Shelby County, says many people look to simplify their lives as they get older.

THUNDER-GRIZZLIES

Grizzlies remember blown 2-1 lead vs OKC in '11

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - The Grizzlies have been here before. Now they will find out if age and experience can help them hold onto home-court advantage.

Leading the Oklahoma City Thunder 2-1 in the 2011 Western Conference semifinals, the Grizzlies blew a 22-point lead in Game 4 and lost 133-123 in triple overtime.

The building was so loud players couldn't hear coaches from the bench or guards calling plays on the court. The Thunder won the series in seven games.

This time around, the Grizzlies have won two straight to take another 2-1 lead in the Western semifinals over the Thunder.

Game 4 is Monday night, and guard Tony Allen says it's time to conquer the moment.

The Thunder is trying to find its shooting touch after its worst performance this postseason.

CHIEFS-BRAY

Vols QB Tyler Bray getting shot with Chiefs

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Tyler Bray believes that every rookie has something to prove.

He may have more than most.

The former Tennessee quarterback left school a year early hoping he'd be chosen highly in the draft, but every team passed on him over the course of 7 agonizing rounds. So he wound up signing with Kansas City as an undrafted free agent, and is now trying to make the team.

He's been participating in the Chiefs' rookie minicamp that finishes up Sunday.

Bray put up big numbers as a starter with the Vols, but questions about his maturity and some minor off-the-field incidents caused his stock to drop. Still, he had 1 of the biggest arms of the rookies coming out, and the Chiefs hope he can compete for a backup job.
