NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

A lingering dispute involving a man, his live-in girlfriend and the girlfriend's family led to a fatal shooting Sunday evening in west Nashville.

According to Metro police investigators, David Duncan, 45, and his girlfriend, Christina Sanders, 38, had been involved in a recent dispute with Sanders' family.

On Sunday, just after 5:30 p.m., Sanders' mother and two brothers came to Duncan's home in the 700 block of 49th Avenue North for the apparent purpose of a confrontation.

Sanders is believed to have unsuccessfully tried to deescalate tensions with her family after they arrived.

During the argument, Duncan retrieved a shotgun and opened fire.

Sanders' brother, 23-year-old Travis Massey, was hit by the gunfire and died at the scene.

Her mother, Vicki Brown, 55, was also hit and taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in critical condition.

Duncan was taken into custody and charged with aggravated assault.  He was booked into the Metro jail on a $50,000 bond.

Metro police said all four parties involved have previous arrests in Davidson County.

No further details were immediately released.
