Lady Vols' Burdick could return in early February

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Tennessee forward Cierra Burdick could return to action in early February if she's able to avoid surgery on her broken right hand.

Athletic department spokesman Eric Trainer said Saturday that the 12th-ranked Lady Vols are optimistic Burdick won't require surgery, though she will be re-evaluated next week. Burdick fractured the fourth metacarpal of her shooting hand Monday while working out on her own.

Burdick was expected to return sometime before the end of the season when the injury was announced Tuesday.

The 6-foot-2 sophomore is averaging 8.8 points and 6.5 rebounds for the Lady Vols (10-3, 1-0 SEC). Taber Spani replaced Burdick in the starting lineup Wednesday and scored 18 points in a 73-53 victory at No. 18 South Carolina.

Tennessee hosts No. 10 Georgia (13-1, 1-0 SEC) on Sunday.
