Self-serve kiosks replace DMV for some Tennessee drivers

The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security are rolling out a new service that gives residents the option of renewing or replacing their driver's license through self-serve kiosks.

Forty new kiosks are being installed throughout the state with many of them going in non-traditional driver's service centers.

Hendersonville and Mt. Juliet city halls and another in Montgomery County have been chosen as the only ones in Middle Tennessee.

Jennifer Donnals, communications director for Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security told Nashville's News 2 the kiosks are primarily in urban and suburban areas with larger populations.

Citizens can re-new or replace a license. Those who need a new license will still need to visit a driver's service center.

Hendersonville city recorder Kay Franklin told said at least a dozen people have used the kiosk since it was installed mid-December.

"Right now residents have the option of going online to do it. It takes about two weeks to get your license and that's without getting a new photo. Or you could go to, I guess our closest office would be Gallatin, and stand in line to go through the process and renew." she said.

Franklin added, "It's so quick, citizens can come in and get their license in just a matter of minutes. It's just so quick and handy."

A temporary driver's license is printed to replace the license for up to 20 days.

The fee can be paid with a debit or credit card.

The service is especially helpful for older citizens who do not currently have a picture ID.

As of January 1, all residents must have a photo ID in order to vote.

In the past residents over the age of 65 did not need a photo on their license.
