Maria Lambert, 40, died last week. Police said she suffered severe bruising and stab wounds.
Kerry Tomlin is charged with first degree murder.
A judge appointed a public defender to Tomlin's case on Thursday.

A Smyrna judge appointed a public defender to a 42-year-old man who is charged with killing his girlfriend last week.
Kerry Tomlin called police on December 26 claiming his girlfriend Maria Lambert had overdosed on drugs at a home located in the 1100 block of Bolton Drive.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered Lambert had severe bruising and multiple stab wounds.
Lambert was transported to Stone Crest Medical Center where she died.
Tomlin is charged with first degree murder.
He remains jailed on an $800,000 bond.
