NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

Freezing temperatures are likely to blame for the death of a homeless man overnight in east Nashville.

A friend of the victim found 50-year-old James Fulmer dead just before 8 a.m. Thursday on the steps of the East Nashville Freewill Baptist Church on the corner of 10th and Russell streets.

An area businessman called police.

The victim's friend, Wilford Goad, who is also homeless, told Nashville's News 2 he purchased a $10 blanket for Fulmer Wednesday night to help keep him warm and last checked on him around 3 a.m.

Police said hypothermia appears to be the cause of the death although an autopsy will be performed.

Temperatures overnight Wednesday dipped into the mid 20s.

There was no evidence of trauma or foul play.
