NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

The Tennessee Department of Transportation has closed a small section of Interstate 40 West at the I-40/I-24 split near downtown to repair a bridge.

The section closed at 5 a.m. Saturday and will remain that way for the entire weekend, reopening on Monday at 5 a.m.

In September, a tractor trailer hauling a large piece of equipment hit the I-24 East ramp bridge that crosses over I-40 West, cracking a bridge beam.

Over the weekend, crews will straighten the damaged steel beam and bolt it to the bridge structure with new plates.

To get around the closure, motorists can use I-24 West to I-65 South back to I-40, making a loop around downtown.  Drivers can also use I-440 West to I-65 North or I-40 West.

Briley Parkway is also a viable route, along with State Route 840 for those traveling East to West.

The closure is posted on digital message boards approaching the city.  Law enforcement will also help divert traffic.
