A Mt. Pleasant man hit by an SUV while trying to retrieve a pair of eyeglasses in the street last week has died.
Steven DeBlasio, 24, died Thursday afternoon at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. According to the police report, DeBlasio dropped his eyeglasses out of the car he was riding in last Friday night and told the driver to pull over so he could get out and look for them.
As he did he was hit by a passing SUV.
The SUV's driver, Gregory Richards, 23, initially continued on but returned to the scene after police arrived.
He told investigators he did not see DeBlasio until it was too late. When asked why he didn't stop to help, Richards said he was in shock.
Richards faces charges for failing to stop and render aid.
DeBlasio leaves behind three children.
