The American Red Cross and Nashville's News 2 are urging people to take a break from shopping and preparing for the holiday to donate blood.
Regina Raccuglia from the American Red Cross says the holidays are a historically tough time for the American Red Cross to collect blood and platelet donations, as families are typically out of their daily routine and forget to make an appointment to donate blood.
During the Holiday Donor Days, all presenting donors will receive a Red Cross t-shirt and will be automatically entered to win a $1,000 American Express gift card as well as a tablet valued at $500.
Donation locations in Nashville include the Nashville Blood Donor Center, and the Lebanon Road Church of Christ, as well as the American Red Cross located at 2201 Charlotte Pike.
Blood will also be collected at Best Buy in Brentwood, the Fly Church of Nazarene in Sante Fe, Governors Square Mall in Clarksville, Rivergate Mall in Goodlettsville, Lane-Agri-Park Complex in Murfreesboro, Life Point Church in Smyrna, and Blue Coast Burrito in Cookeville.
To schedule an appointment to donate blood, call 1-800-RED-CROSS or visit RedCrossBlood.org.
Most healthy individuals who are at least 17 years of age (16 with parental consent) and weigh a minimum of 110 pounds are eligible to donate blood.
The Tennessee Valley Blood Region serves about 60 hospitals and must have 600 people donate blood or platelets each weekday to meet the needs of hospital patients.
