A Mt. Pleasant man is fighting for his life at Vanderbilt University Medical Center after he was hit by an SUV while trying to retrieve a pair of eyeglasses in the street. The incident happened around 11:30 p.m. Friday on South James Campbell Boulevard at Brookmeade Drive in Columbia.According to the police report, Steven DeBlasio, 24, dropped his eyeglasses out of the car he was riding in and told the driver to pull over so he could get out and look for them. Witnesses told police the driver of an SUV, 23-year-old Gregory Richards, hit DeBlasio and continued driving after the incident.A passerby who dialed 911 told the operator, "We've just passed an accident, a hit-and-run accident. There's somebody lying in the middle of the median."Richards later returned after police arrived. He told them he did not see DeBlasio until it was too late. When asked why he didn't stop to help, Richards said he was "in shock over the incident."Richards was arrested and charged with failure to stop and render aid. He was released Saturday from the Maury County jail on $5,000 bond. DeBlasio was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center by helicopter. The father of three was last listed in critical condition.
