ATTALLA, Ala. (AP) - Authorities say a 2-year-old girl has died after she fell into a swimming pool in Attalla.
The Gadsden Times reports that the death occurred Thursday afternoon at a residence on John Avenue in the northeast Alabama town.
Etowah County Deputy Coroner Michael Head identified the child as Lily Degan.
Authorities say the girl was staying with her grandmother while her mother was at work and wandered to a neighbor's house.
Head said one board was missing on the fence surrounding the in-ground pool, and the child apparently was trying to get to a dog on the other side of the fence. He said the pool was covered, but the toddler apparently stepped on the cover and fell through.
Attalla is about five miles west of Gadsden.
