MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -

A small plane crashed Thursday morning at the Murfreesboro Municipal Airport in Rutherford County, injuring the 49-year-old pilot.

The crash occurred around 8:30 a.m. at the airport located off Highway 231 and north of Northfield Boulevard.

Upon arrival, crews discovered a single engine airplane with Randall Ray, trapped, but awake and alert.

After he was extricated, Ray was taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.

He suffered several lacerations and possibly a broken leg.

Officials on the scene called Ray "very luck to be alive."

It wasn't immediately clear what caused the plane to crash or if Ray was attempting to take off or land his plane at the time.

Officials from the Federal Aviation Administration were on scene investigating.

More information will be released when available.
