Driver blamed for interstate crash says he fell asleep

Posted: Updated: Dec 10, 2012 1:17 PM CST
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

A driver fell asleep behind the wheel, causing his tractor trailer to run off the road and jackknife Monday morning in Nashville.

The crash happened shortly after 10 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 24 just before the highway merges with Interstate 40, east of downtown.

The driver told police he fell asleep behind the wheel.  His truck struck a concrete barrier and jackknifed across the interstate.

The collision caused several pieces of concrete to tumble into the westbound lanes of I-40.  One lane of I-40 West was shutdown as a result.  It has since reopened.

I-24 East was closed for several hours and drivers were diverted around the crash.

A crane was brought the scene to upright the truck.

It was towed away and the interstate was reopened just before 1 p.m.

It was not immediately clear if charges would be filed.
